What does working as an editor involve?
The editor is a senior role within a media organisation with responsibility for the editorial output of a particular newspaper, magazine or website. The editor will lead the editorial team, liaising with section editors and the production editor, art editor and news editor, as well as report to either a publisher or managing editor. In many cases the role of editor is also to act as a figure head for the title and be called on to be interviewed by the media as an expert and represent the title at events. The editor also has a financial role, ensuring the product is produced within budget.
Editor - Key Requirements
A journalism qualification or degree, with the National Council for the Training of Journalists among the most respected qualifications bodies
At least five years' experience as a journalist
Good organisational skills
Excellent management skills, especially people management skills
Good IT skills
Editor - Key Responsibilities
Managing the editorial team
Making swift editorial decisions
Taking responsibility for legal problems such as libel
Representing the media group at events
Speaking to the media as an expert
Ensuring deadlines are met
Commissioning freelancers and ensuring budgets are met
Writing copy such as comment pieces and the occasional news story or feature, especially if at a small publication
Typical career route for an editor
Most editors will have had a number of years' experience as a journalist and section editor. Often experience as a deputy editor is required. Most editors either take more managerial roles such as publisher or managing editor, but some move into senior roles within public relations.
